Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA) is making significant progress in strengthening Botswana’s education system through the development of the Botswana Senior Secondary Education (BSSE) qualification.
This landmark initiative is aimed at enhancing the structure, quality, and relevance of senior secondary education in Botswana, while ensuring alignment with national priorities and international standards.
Strengthening Quality Assurance
BQA is mandated to oversee the development, registration, and quality assurance of qualifications within the National Credit and Qualifications Framework (NCQF) across all levels of education and training.
While the Authority has made notable strides in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and Higher Education, the development of the BSSE marks an important step in extending quality assurance into General Education.
Once completed, the BSSE will become the first General Education qualification to be registered on the NCQF, improving system integration, transparency, and learner progression pathways.
Collaborative Development Process
The BSSE qualification is being developed through a consultative and inclusive process involving education experts, curriculum specialists, and industry stakeholders. This ensures that the qualification is both academically sound and responsive to labour market needs.
Ongoing Stakeholder Engagement
During one of the stakeholder consultation workshops to review and refine the draft qualification, Ms Lesego Barakanye, Acting Director for NCQF Services, emphasised the importance of stakeholder participation in ensuring the qualification is relevant and implementable.
She noted that incorporating the BSSE into the NCQF represents a significant milestone in strengthening pathways across the education system.
Preparing Learners for the Future
The BSSE qualification places strong emphasis on the development of 21st-century skills, including:
Critical thinking and problem-solving
Creativity and innovation
Digital literacy
Adaptability and lifelong learning
This approach aims to better prepare learners for higher education, training, and the evolving world of work.
The Way Forward
The draft BSSE qualification will undergo further refinement based on stakeholder input, followed by validation and registration on the NCQF.
Through this initiative, BQA continues to advance a more integrated, transparent, and future-oriented education system that supports both learner success and national development.
